Description:

Purpose and Objectives:

Our primary objective is to assess and quantify patient preferences on key attributes or NPTs among two high-risk populations in Ontario: sexually active a) MSM and b) heterosexual men and women form ACB communities. With the data collected, we will also estimate the influence of individuals’ preferences regarding NPT attributes on the potential population-level HIV transmission impact of NPTs in settings like Ontario. Primary objective: to separately evaluate patient preferences regarding key attributes of new HIV prevention technologies (NPTs) among three populations of sexually active adults: HIV-uninfected MSM, heterosexual men from ACB communities, and heterosexual women from ACB communities. Aim 1.1: To quantify relative preferences for key NPT attributes using odds ratios. Aim 1.2: To determine which attributes in a potential NPT could maximize patient preferences. Aim 1.3: To quantify the trade-offs in HIV prevention efficacy that respondents are willing to accept in exchange for different NPT attributes. Aim 1.4: To predict the proportion of individuals who would use different types of NPTs. Secondary objective: to estimate the influence of individual-level preferences regarding NPT attributes on the population-level impact of NPTs on HIV transmission among MSM and ACB populations in Ontario. Aim 2.1: To quantify the potential impact of real and hypothetical NPTs with different attributes on HIV incidence in Ontario, when uptake is ‘assigned’ to users by providers based on risk. Aim 2.2: To quantify the potential impact of such NPTs on HIV incidence in Ontario, when uptake is determined by patient preferences. Exploratory objective Aim 3.1: to determine whether demographic (age, sex, race), behavioural (eg. HIV risk scores) and risk group (MSM vs. ACB) characteristics are associated with NPT attribute preferences.
